Seafood sustainability is a critical concern, given the harm it can cause to ocean ecosystems when overfished. Unfortunately, in a world driven by consumerism and capitalism, many corporations and fishermen prioritise high-volume sales over ethical and sustainable fishing practices. However, at Little Farms, we are committed to a different path.
We have carefully selected ethical and sustainable fisheries as our partners, including Mooloolaba Fisheries, Akaroa Salmon, and Boston Bay for their mussels.
Mooloolaba Fisheries are meticulously managed by the Australian Government for ecological sustainability. They pride themselves on understanding the who, when, where, and how of their fishing practices. Utilising science and technology, they closely monitor every commercial fishing vessel, gathering valuable data on various seafood species and implementing strict controls on fish size and quantities caught.
At Little Farms, our fresh fish selection changes weekly, based on what mother nature provides. We do not maintain a set inventory but ensure that our offerings align with nature's bounty. One of our best-selling products, Akaroa King Salmon, stands out for its exceptional taste and commitment to the environment. These king salmon are considered some of the finest in the world, grown with the smallest environmental footprint of any ocean salmon farm globally.
Farmed in the pristine waters of Akaroa Harbour, these salmon benefit from strong flows and deep, cold waters from the rugged Pacific Ocean. Unlike many salmon farms driven by profit, Akaroa Salmon prioritises the well-being of their fish. They avoid using antibiotics, maintain low stocking densities, hand-feed the fish a carefully crafted diet, and refrain from using hormones. The nets and boat hulls are cleaned without harmful antifouling chemicals. This approach significantly reduces the carbon footprint of Akaroa Salmon in comparison to other land animal proteins, coming second only to eggs and close to tofu.
These mussels originate from the pristine waters of Boston Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, where they thrive on nutrient-rich waters from the Great Southern Ocean's upwellings. The result is a delectably sweet mussel.
Australian blue mussels are one of the most sustainable seafood choices you can make. Each mussel filters up to 20 liters of seawater daily, contributing to a cleaner ocean environment. They feed on natural nutrients and phytoplankton, eliminating the need for artificial food that could harm the environment. Moreover, mussels aid in preventing harmful algal blooms that can damage marine ecosystems.
Boston Bay takes its commitment to sustainability further by using biodegradable materials like cotton in their mussel farms. This cotton secures baby mussels (wild spat) as they mature. Over time, the cotton naturally disintegrates, leaving no harmful particles behind. The company also conducts regular beach cleanups to remove plastics, fishing ropes, and debris, safeguarding the environment and wildlife.
